Southbourne is about four and a half miles from Bournemouth town centre and a couple of miles from Christchurch. Christchurch is the nearest railway station. The sea is just at the end of the road, about 450 yards, and dogs are allowed on the beach at this end of the town all year round. Hengistbury Head is just a short walk away and is a large open space, ideal for dog walking (or take the miniature train). There's also a ferry to Mudeford Quay and a rather nice pub. The New Forest is but a short drive away and is so large you can always find a quiet spot even on the busiest summer day.
